Europe signs €387.8 million contract for LUMI-AI supercomputer

Bull will deploy the AMD-based system in Finland for access in 2027, with funding split equally between EuroHPC JU and the six-country consortium.

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking signed a procurement contract with Bull to deploy the LUMI-AI supercomputer in Kajaani, Finland. The signature moves the project from tendering into delivery, but the system is not yet installed or available to users.

LUMI-AI carries a total budget of €387.8 million covering acquisition, delivery, installation and maintenance. EuroHPC JU will finance 50% through the Digital Europe Programme, while the LUMI AI Factory consortium will fund the remaining half.

Finland leads the hosting consortium alongside Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland. The machine will be located at the CSC – IT Center for Science data center in Kajaani, and computing allocations will be divided jointly by EuroHPC JU and the consortium according to their investments.

The announced architecture combines next-generation AMD Instinct MI430X graphics processors with sixth-generation AMD EPYC processors containing 256 cores. The platform is designed for large, dynamic and often confidential datasets as well as simulation and data-intensive scientific workloads.

EuroHPC JU expects LUMI-AI to provide ten times the artificial-intelligence capacity of the current LUMI supercomputer. That multiplier is a projected comparison rather than a completed benchmark; realized performance will depend on the final configuration, software, workload and system acceptance.

Installation and user availability are expected in 2027. The system is primarily intended for startups and small and medium-sized companies conducting research and innovation, but it will also serve the wider research community through jointly managed access.

The LUMI AI Factory has operated since April 2025 using the existing LUMI system for manufacturing, health and life sciences, communications, climate, materials and language technology. LUMI-AI will expand that service base rather than create the organization from zero.

The contract is the sixth EuroHPC procurement for a next-generation AI Factory supercomputer and forms part of a network of 19 factories and 13 antennas. A separate LUMI-IQ quantum computer is planned for experimental integration with HPC and AI; the combination remains a development platform, not proof of operational quantum advantage.
